Q. |
What is SeekChoir? |
|
A. |
SeekChoir is a robust, full-featured retrieval system
that enables users to browse and navigate hierarchies,
allowing the searcher many ways to investigate and
employ related and synonymous topics and concepts while
searching. SeekChoir supports vocabulary-enhanced
keyword searches within database records. But, if
LinkChoir has been employed to index database records
using thesauri constructed in TermChoir or some other
thesaurus builder programs, SeekChoir also supports a
controlled vocabulary search of those records indexed
with descriptors from the associated thesaurus. |

|
Q. |
What is required to run SeekChoir? |
|
A. |
SeekChoir requires only a Web server and a browser.
Since it is completely based on XML, it doesn't even
require a DBMS to store your thesaurus data. It is truly
open allowing the use of any operating system,
any Web server, and any client. |
| |
|
|
Q. |
Does
SeekChoir support multiple thesauri? |
|
A. |
Yes, you can incorporate as many thesauri as you desire
into SeekChoir for viewing and searching. |
|
Q. |
Can I use SeekChoir without other WebChoir products?
|
|
A. |
Yes, but you will need
ConceptChoir or TranChoir
to produce, from the interested thesauri, XML documents
that are designed and optimized for ViewChoir,
LinkChoir, and SeekChoir.. |
|
|
|
|
Q. |
If I update my thesaurus using ConceptChoir, how
difficult is it to post my new, revised thesaurus via
SeekChoir? |
|
A. |
| You just need to use ConceptChoir or TranChoir to generate XML documents again and replace the previous version. |

Q. |
Do users have to install SeekChoir on their local
machines in order to use it? |
|
A. |
|
No, users just need to have an Internet
browser such as IE or Netscape on their
local machines, since SeekChoir is
completely Web-based. |
|
|
|
|
|
|
Q. |
What types of databases can I link to? |
|
A. |
SeekChoir supports most relational databases that
support JDBC or ODBC, including Oracle, DB2, SQL-Server,
and MySQL. |
|
|
|
|
Q. |
How does SeekChoir differ from retrieval systems that
already incorporate thesauri into their search functions
and capabilities?
|
|
A. |
Among many others, SeekChoir offers two unique features
that set SeekChoir apart from others. First, it allows
you to search for information by browsing your thesaurus
in an expandable/collapsible hierarchy so that you can
easily perform broaden or narrowed searches. Second, it
allows you to search either controlled vocabularies,
free-text, or the combination of controlled vocabularies
and free-text. Please see
SeekChoir white paper for details.. |
|
Q. |
Can I just use SeekChoir, or do I need the other
products for it to be effective? |
|
A. |
You can just use SeekChoir for keyword or enhanced
keyword searching. However, if you have used LinkChoir
to index your databases using thesauri, you can use
SeekChoir to search the combination of controlled
vocabularies and free-text that can greatly improve your
searching. Please see
SeekChoir white paper for details. |
|
Q. |
How difficult is it to integrate SeekChoir with my
databases? |
|
A. |
SeekChoir permits you to connect and configure any ODBC
and JDBC databases without any programming and without
any investment in additional hardware and software for
SeekChoir. And all you need to do is to connect and
configure your databases using SeekChoir Database
Configuration Wizard and to integrate thesauri, if any,
into SeekChoir using TranChoir. That means if you have a
need to find information from an ODBC or JDBC database,
you can have a fully featured retrieval system for your
database up and running in a matter of few days without
writing a single line of code. Normally, it would take
only a few hours to connect and configure a database
using the SeekChoir Database Configuration Wizard,
depending on the size of the database. Please see
SeekChoir white paper for details. |
