Vocabulary Explorer

After you sign into the ConceptChoir system, the system will open the ConceptChoir Vocabulary Explorer (VE), the main window of ConceptChoir. VE is composed of five areas: the Tree Display Area (TDA), Tool Bar Area (TBA), Concept Search Area (CSA), Web Search Area (WSA), and Node Detail Area (NDA) as shown in Figure 1.   The TDA displays the concepts in the selected hierarchy in a tree structure, much like Microsoft Windows products. The TBA contains command buttons you can use to manipulate the hierarchy in the TDA, the WSD allows you to search selected concepts in the TDA against the Internet using popular search engines, and the NDA shows the detailed information of the highlighted concept in the TDA.

1.  Tree Display Area

ConceptChoir's Tree Display Area (TDA) adapts a new design. As you would notice from the diagrams followed, you can separate the Tree Display Area into two parts. The top part is the Heading Area, and the bottom part is the Display Area. ConceptChoir merges all your vocabularies into a single Root node for easy navigations through vocabularies, facets, and hierarchies.

click the sign in front of the Root node to list your vocabularies in the Display Area at any time during your navigation. (See Figure below)

Click the sign in front of the vocabulary node, denoted with symbol would promote the chosen vocabulary node to the Heading Area, and list the facets/hierarchies it contains in the Display Area. If Facets are defined to exist in the vocabulary, a list of facets will be displayed. Otherwise, a list of hierarchies will be displayed. Facet node will be noted by a symbol while Hierarchy node will be noted by a symbol. (See Figure below)

Click the sign in front of a node in the Display Area will promote the selected node to the Heading Area, and list its children in the Display Area. If a chosen node is a facet node, the hierarchy list will be displayed similar to the above Figure. If a chosen node is a hierarchy node, the top concepts of the hierarchy will be displayed in the Display Area as the Figure below suggested.

Tree Display Area (TDA) has two display mode, Tree Display View and Alphabetical Display View. The Hierarchical Display View, as shown in Figure 2, presents your data in a expandable/collapsible hierarchy tree format. When you sign in the ConceptChoir system, your last visited concept will be chosen to be the current selected concept. If this is your first visit to the ConceptChoir system, the vocabulary root will be your current concept. sign in front of a concept means there are children associated with the concept. You can click the sign to expand the concept to list all its children in the TDA. The sign will turn to sign after the operation. Clicking on the sign in front of a concept will instruct the TDA to hide all its children. To move a concept or a branch of concept to other nodes. you can simply highlight the concept, or a root concept of the branch that is going to be moved, and then drag and drop to the target location.

Figure 2.   Tree Display Area -- Tree Display View

You can switch from a Tree Display View to Alphabetical Display View. To switch the display, simply click the button from the tool bar as shown in Figure 3, and the system will show the hierarchy in the Alphabetical Display View (Figure 4).

Figure 3.   Switch Display View

Figure 4.   Tree Display Area -- Alphabetical Display View

Alphabetical Display View presents your vocabulary in a list format. When you are in the Alphabetical Display View, you can click the Alpha Index Letter to change the alphabet range in which the concepts are displayed. To switch back, click the button from the tool bar again.

There are six possible symbols placed in front of the concepts with different meanings:

  • - means the concept is still in process stage
  • - mean the concept have been approved
  • - means the concept is checked out by you
  • - means the concept is checked out by others
  • - means the concept has been approved and is checked out by you
  • - means the concept has been approved and is checked out buy others

2. Node Detail Area

When you click any node or concept in either a tree display or an alphabetical display of TDA, the detailed information for the concept will be displayed in the Node Detail Area (“NDA”) in a view-only mode.  The NDA has two display mode, view-only mode (Figure 5) and edit mode (Figure 6). If you wish to add a new concept as the current selected concept's child, or too edit the detailed information of the current selected concept, click the corresponding buttons in the tool bar and NDA will be enabled for editing. Please see discussions on ConceptChoir Concept System to read more about Node Detail Area.

Please read more about tabbed Panel for editor in ConceptChoir Editor Interface. In Email Tab of Personal Options as shown in Figure 7.2, you need to setup your outgoing SMTP Server information. Email SMTP information must be setup properly for ConceptChoir email function to work. Consult your system administrator about how to setup SMTP.

  • Top Level Option - allows you to set level of promotion on top terms. ConceptChoir's Top Level makes navigation through hierarchical display easier and faster. When user expand a node from hierarchical displayed tree, ConceptChoir will first check the hierarchical level of the concept. If the level of the concept is less or equal to the Top Level number, the node will be promoted to the Heading Area and only its narrower concepts are listed in the Display Area. Level 0 is the default value, meaning no promotion will occur when expanding top terms. Figure 7.3 shows the expanding results when no promotion allowed. Figure 7.4 shows the same expanding results but with Top Level set to "1". Note that the concept "Marsupial" with hierarchical level 1 was promoted to the header section with Top Level set to 1.

4. Concept Search Area

The Concept Search Area provides the users a easy way to find and jump to a concept.

Figure 9. Concept Search Area

Input the concept to search in the text box and click Search button. if the concept exists in current vocabulary, system will find the matching concept, and highlight the concept and display the concept's hierarchical position in the TDA. Concept Search supports all Boolean operators: "AND", "OR", "NOT" and wildcard "*". When searching with Boolean operators, Concept Search will recognize your searching query and return concepts that satisfy your demand. Search scope depends on current HT status, the top area of Tree view. When the user has drilled down into a hierarchy, The search scope is the current hierarchy, When they are multiple results, the results will be displayed in alphabetical view automatically.

5. Web Search Area

The Web Search Area (WSA) contains a Website dropdown list, a Language dropdown list, and three check boxes for Broader Term, UF, and RT, and a Search button (Figure 10). Yahoo is the default search engine, but you can change the default setting using the lookup table utility. The default for the Language dropdown list is the current interface language, and as default,  Broader Term, synonyms, and related terms are not included in the search.

Figure 10.   Web Search Area

To search Internet, simply highlight a concept (or few concepts) from the tree display or alphabetical display, and click the Search button, if the default is what you want. The system will then send the appropriate URL to the specified search engine, resulting in a list of search results from your search in a browser window.
